A Christmas Miracle

It’s Christmas morning and Kyla had finished tearing through all her presents. One of her requests to Santa this year had been a baby sister. After realizing that she did not in fact get a baby sister she thought to herself and said “I guess I didn’t write my letter early enough for Santa to get Mrs. Claus pregnant”.

Pumpkin

In the middle of a condo viewing this evening, I referred to Kyla as “Pumpkin”. She pulled me aside and said very seriously “Um, could you please not call me Pumkin, or anything that’s not my name, in public anymore?”

Baby Sister?

Kyla had completed her letter to Santa. I read through it and most of it seemed fairly normal. However, my jaw hit the floor at the line that requested “a baby sister”. I tried to explain that it wasn’t really up to Santa to bring baby sisters and that Mommy wasn’t planning on having another baby anytime soon.

She told me that she’d also be open to adoption.

Remembrance Day

Today Kyla received a current photograph of a family member wearing a military uniform and standing in a large open space.

"I bet that photo was taken in Flanders Field. I wonder if he fought in one of the World Wars..."

If nothing else, this proves she retained something from the Remembrance Day ceremony she had attended only a few days earlier.

Careers

For the longest time Kyla has wanted to be a singing, veterinarian, dog trainer when she grew up. Today, after watching Cirque de Solei, her career ambitions have been redirected towards becoming a professional hula-hooper.

Men and Women, Women and Men

Out of nowhere (although I'll blame on the television) Kyla started quizzing on me on why some women choose to become men and some men choose to become women. Seriously.

Sarcasm

The main road near our house has been under construction for weeks. This morning I started singing a song about how much I loved construction. Kyla told me to “quit being such a sarcasm”.

Politics

Yesterday was the municipal election in Calgary. Kyla had taken a fairly keen interest in all the hype running up to the election and had helped me vote the day before. At 5:30 am she came bounding into my room (like it was Christmas) wondering if Nenshi was the new Mayor of Calgary. When I answered yes, she proceeded to do a happy dance in the middle of my bed.

I had ankle surgery a few days ago and had been on crutches for the earlier part of the week. Today Kyla and I decided to attempt a short walk.

Kyla, always filled with love and support, says "sheesh Mom, even Terry Fox could walk faster than you..."

Zhu Zhu

The fad toy of the week is the zhu zhu pet and Kyla is determined that she needs about 10 of them. In attempts to make some additional pocket change, I have caught her scouring couch cushions, washing walls and most recently trying to pull out her own teeth. I give her an A+ for creativity.

The Cookie Bet

We spent the afternoon making cookies - and then eating them. At one point I told Kyla to slow down on the eating or she was going to be sick. "Mom, I bet you I can eat a zillion cookies and never get sick."

I won this bet. Unfortunately my victory was short lived because I spent the rest of the evening trying to get the smell of cookie puke out of the hall carpet.

Seven

Today is Kyla's 7th Birthday. A very excited little girl came bouncing into my room at 5:45. "Mom, I think my voice sounds older, don't you?"

The Truth About Mating

Walking to school this morning, Kyla and I see two crows chasing each other.

Kyla: What are those crows doing?
Me: Maybe they're playing
Kyla: Maybe they want to mate

-silence-

Kyla: Wanna know where I learned about mating?
Me: Ok
Kyla: Well I was doing some research on white-tailed deer. In the spring the buck finds a doe he likes, stomps his foot on the ground and takes her to a quiet place. Then in a few months there's a fawn.
